In our Lost Creek Addition project, our homeowners are an active family with three energetic sons who had outgrown their 1970’s one-story home in the heart of Austin. They did not want to relocate but also desired ample space for the boys to spread out, grow, and thrive.
The parents envisioned an upstairs retreat designed just for the kids, complete with a TV /lounge area, built-in desks for schoolwork/crafts, and individual bedrooms and bathrooms for each child.
Downstairs, they desired multiple areas for entertaining, spanning from casual movie nights with the kids’ friends to holiday dinners with extended family. The family wanted the main level to feel welcoming and functional for everyday living. White oak custom cabinetry, a spacious new kitchen with thoughtful storage, connected areas for entertaining, a pool bath accessible from the exterior, and an updated wood-burning fireplace were all on their wish list. They were also focused on quality craftsmanship and thoughtful details that would make the home not only beautiful but also practical for their family to live and grow into.
This home was completely taken down to the studs, rebuilt with careful attention to detail, and expanded with a full second-story addition. Every decision was guided by the family’s desire for a bright, functional, and cohesive space that could grow with them. From structural upgrades to thoughtful design choices, the result is a timeless transformation that balances form and function. For Part One of this blog series, let’s take a closer look at the work Skelly Build completed on the exterior of the home and the first level…
The house was taken down to the studs, with framing replaced as needed to restore structural integrity. A second story was then added to the southwest section of the home, expanding the footprint and giving the family’s three sons their own dedicated space.
The exterior features natural limestone masonry paired with James Hardie Fiber Cement Artisan V-Groove siding, painted in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore for lasting durability and low maintenance.
A new front door painted in Benjamin Moore Aegean Teal adds a welcoming pop of color, while 3x3x15 cut honed limestone and hem-fir nickel groove 1×5 vertical siding introduce warmth to the thoughtfully refreshed patio space.
The back exterior of the home was taken down to the studs and rebuilt with framing replaced as needed to ensure structural integrity. For added durability and energy efficiency, the home was built with ZIP System® sheathing and tape. This advanced building envelope provides a continuous air and water barrier while streamlining installation, ensuring long-term performance and protection. A new pool, patio, and landscaping completed the backyard transformation.
The home welcomes you through the dining room, which retained its original footprint. A new staircase was integrated into the space, providing access to the second floor while blending seamlessly with the existing layout. The white oak slat wall detail ties in with the beams and built-ins throughout the house.
The living room is directly off the entry and dining room. It was once a sunken space, separated from the rest of the home with a step down. By leveling the floor, the area now feels larger, brighter, and more cohesive. Removing the wall between the living room and kitchen further opened the space. New structural beams were installed, custom-wrapped in white oak. These changes opened up the entire main level, creating a seamless flow.
The fireplace remained in its original location, but was fully replaced with a new Mason-Lite system. The surround received Ann Sacks Ballard limestone mosaic tile with meticulously cut mitered corners all the way to the ceiling. Custom white oak built-ins were added alongside the fireplace to blend functionality with the clients’ lifestyle. Designed with precise dimensions, the shelving provides enough height for vinyl records to stand upright, while integrated outlets make it easy to plug in and enjoy the family’s record player.
We extended the downstairs slab to build out a beautiful new kitchen addition. The new kitchen features custom cabinetry in rift-sawn white oak. The flat-slab, full-overlay, frameless construction delivers a sleek, modern profile, while soft-close doors and drawers ensure both durability and daily comfort. Dacor appliances and a Bosch paneled dishwasher beautifully stand up to everyday demands of a busy family, while the island provides a perfect space for the three kids. The Hansgrohe faucet resets the spray mode after use, ending a decade-long rivalry between husband and wife. 🙂
Conveniently located off the garage and just around the corner from the kitchen, the laundry room was also upgraded. The cabinetry is finished in Sherwin Williams Portsmouth with a white oak panel to match the kitchen. Durable Ann Sacks Terrazzo Form Field Tile in Velvet Smoke was installed on the floor, while MSI Calico White quartz echoes the finishes used throughout the rest of the home.
Stepping into a previously converted porch area off of the living room, the clients envisioned a cozy, casual space where the kids could relax and spend time with their friends. The original room was partially open to the main living area, so we added two sets of double pocket doors to prevent sound from traveling throughout the rest of the house. To bring in more natural light and update the look of the home, new windows and a large sliding door were added.
The family room was extended into the former study, creating a larger, more open gathering space. A small addition was also built to accommodate the new pool bath. Located just off the family room, the new pool bath makes outdoor living effortless with quick access from the backyard. Terrazzo Field Form tile on the walls and floors creates a playful, durable, and slip-resistant backdrop for a wet pool bath. Flat-slab custom cabinetry is painted in Sherwin Williams Portsmouth.
Finally, the last space we will touch on today that got some love was the downstairs guest bathroom, renovated with flat-slab cabinets paired with Ann Sacks Terrazzo Field Form tile. In the shower, Ann Sacks Savoy Circle Field Tile is checkered with its flat counterpart. Daltile Revalia Remix Ripple tile brightens the vanity backsplash, while the MSI Calico White quartz continues the countertop material used throughout the home.
