The Heart of Skelly Build: Who Are We?
Welcome to The CEO Corner — your inside look at the construction industry, Skelly Build, and how we’re shaping the future of custom building in Austin.
Last month, our leadership team recently completed a 2-day Annual meeting where we reevaluated our core values and planned for the next 1, 3, and 10 years. The two days were electric as we looked back at where we came from and mapped out where we’re going—and more importantly, how we’re going to get there. Before talking about strategy or the future, we centered ourselves in a fundamental question: Who are we?
That discussion brought us straight back to our core values. The leadership team quickly realized that these values aren’t just bullets on a wall—they are the heart of Skelly Build, the filter for every decision we make, and the engine that will carry us toward our long-term vision.
Below is a summary of our core-value conversation:
1. Lifelong Learning
Lifelong Learning sits at the foundation of Skelly Build. New information and better ways of doing things are everywhere if you’re willing to look for them—and we are. Whether it’s advancements in construction science, new technologies, or leadership development, we are constant students of our craft. A recent example is our implementation of an AI estimating tool to increase accuracy and speed during preconstruction. It reflects our mindset: keep improving, stay curious, and never settle for yesterday’s systems.
2. Humbly Confident
We take pride in our expertise, our craftsmanship, and our ability to deliver exceptional results—but we do it without ego. Being humbly confident means showing up prepared, knowledgeable, and strong while staying open to feedback and collaboration. It’s about knowing we’re great at what we do, yet always willing to learn from clients, partners, and each other.
3. Positive Passion
Construction is complex—and it takes energy, enthusiasm, and a resilient mindset to thrive in it. Positive Passion is the fuel behind our team culture. It shows up in how we show up for clients, how we tackle challenges, and how we create a work environment that is exciting, optimistic, and people-driven. When you love what you do, it shows in the work, and it shows in the experience you create for others.
4. Ownership & Accountability
This is one of our strongest differentiators. We believe in doing what we say we’re going to do, solving problems head-on, and taking responsibility at every step. Ownership & Accountability is how we build trust—with clients, trade partners, architects, and each other. It’s also how we ensure projects stay on track, budgets stay tight, and communication stays transparent.
5. Collaboration in Every Direction
Great construction requires great relationships. Collaboration in Every Direction means we work as a unified team—not just internally, but also with clients, architects, designers, engineers, trade partners, subcontractors and vendors. Strong communication flows up, down, and across. This value reinforces our belief that the best outcomes happen when everyone rows in the same direction.
As we step into the next level of growth, these core values will continue to anchor us and propel us. They define how we hire, how we lead, how we build, and how we serve. Our Annual EOS meeting reminded us of something simple but powerful:
When you know who you are, you know exactly where you’re going—and how to get there.
