Renovating a nearly century-old home is a delicate balance between preserving its historical charm and upgrading it for today’s lifestyle. That was the vision for our Cherrywood Home clients, who brought Skelly Build in to lead a thoughtful transformation of their beloved space. Built in the 1930s, the house had good bones but needed significant updates to improve both form and function.
Our clients wanted to update the overall look of the home while moving a few walls and doorways to better accommodate their living style. This vision led to an interior remodel that reconfigured the layout for better flow, functionality, and comfort. By adjusting key structural elements like walls and door placements, Skelly Build helped transform compartmentalized rooms into more open, breathable living spaces—without compromising the home’s original character.
Beauty in the Details
The design choices made throughout the Cherrywood Home reflect a sophisticated blend of old and new. The bathroom now features white oak custom cabinetry (crafted in our in-house cabinetry shop, Skelly Built), marble countertops, and concrete tile—a palette that feels simultaneously timeless and contemporary. These materials were chosen not only for their beauty but also for their durability and ease of maintenance.
The kitchen received similar upgrades with handpicked finishes including:
-
Quartz countertops in the kitchen
-
A new vent hood and appliance package
- Skelly Built Paint grade shaker style cabinetry with custom storage solutions
-
Distinctive plumbing and light fixtures throughout
Each selection contributed to a clean, updated look that still feels right at home in a 1930s bungalow.
The Challenges of an Older Home
Of course, opening up the walls of a home built in 1930 revealed its fair share of surprises. The main issue we ran into on the house was that it was old and we had no idea what we would need to find and repair once the walls were opened up! Hidden structural issues and outdated wiring were just a few of the problems uncovered along the way. But with Skelly Build’s experienced team on the job, every unexpected twist was met with a tailored, practical solution that kept the project on track.
Despite the home’s age—or perhaps because of it—this renovation was about more than just modernizing. It was about telling a new story within an old framework. Original trim details, retrofitted windows and classic proportions were preserved or replicated wherever possible. Combined with the new layout and materials, the final renovation feels both intentional and inviting—a home that honors its past while embracing the present.
